19/08 World's Photography Day

World's Photography Day is being Observed Today On 19/08 .

PHOTOGRAPHY

The word photography comes from two ancient Greek words: photo, for "light," and graph, for "drawing." "Drawing with light" is a way of describing photography. When a photograph is made, light or some other form of radiant energy, such as X rays, is used to record a picture of an object or scene on a light-sensitive surface.
Early photographs were called sun pictures, because sunlight itself was used to create the image. Mankind has been a maker of images at least since the cave paintings of some 20,000 years ago. With the invention of photography, a realistic image that would have taken a skilled artist hours or even days to draw could be recorded in exact detail within a fraction of a second.

A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. MICROSOFT & NOKIA ALLIED

First time MICROSOFT is going to make Office Application for non-Windows mobile phones....ya its True MICROSOFT is going to do this as Microsoft and Nokia have formed an alliance to bring Microsoft (MS) software applications on the Nokia phones and to counter the dominance of the Research in Motion's (RIM)Blackberry.

NOKIA which contributes 45% of the global smartphone market with 200 million users. Now ,these Nokia phones will b available with the latest versions of the Microsoft's Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and messaging. The companies expect to offer Nokia phones running on the Symbian operating system and hving Office in the next yr, initially targeting enterprise customers integrated into Nokia's E Series phones.

This is giving some of their competitors; let's spell it out, RIM, a run for their money. I don't think BlackBerry has seen the kind of competition we can provide them now.

Research in Motion's BlackBerry has created the market for mobile e-mail, and has a dominant position in the corporate sector, especially in North America.

RIM should be reasonably safe in the near-term bcos Nokia's presence in the U.S. is relatively small. Partnering more closely with Microsoft will help to raise Nokia's profile in the U.S.

The alliance is also looking to counter Google recent move into free online software, targeted at Microsoft's business customers and the growing popularity of Apple's iPhone device.

Microsoft's new Office suite of applications could be available to large numbers of users as compared to the users of Windows Mobile phones, which make up nine percent of the smartphone market.

Caffeine a NEW SEARCH ENGINE

Caffeine a NEW SEARCH ENGINE by Google, the preview version of Caffeine is out ,caffeine a new search engine technology which promises to kick off the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions. It seems the tie up of Yahoo and MS made Google to think differently. This proactive idea is really fabulous....

The new search engine is the redeployment of the computing network that Google uses to connect searchers and results. The search engine can change how the company ranks in its search engine. The companies will have to change their Search Engine Optimization(SEO) to protect their Google ranking.

Google is not changing the user interface as part of the Caffeine update. So the average user is not likely to be surprised by the way results appear. The update does not affect the ranking of ads on the search engine.

For the last several months, a large team of Googlers has been working on a secret project: a next-generation architecture for Google's web search, it's the first step in a process that will let us push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions.

Google makes constant changes to its search algorithms and infrastructure, but such a change in this magnitude has not been done since 2006.

The search page is identical to the classic, clean Google web page.

Google is opening a web developer preview to collect the feedback regarding how Caffeine performs compared to its current search engine and is not looking for comparisons to offerings from rival internet firms.

Microsoft has been praising the momentum of its recently-launched Bing search engine and is believed to take long term approach for closing the gap with Google. Microsoft has also announced a tie-up with Yahoo. Google has a two-third share in the search engine market, as Yahoo stands second and Microsoft at third in a search engine market.

This seems to be an update from google to its search engine..but anywhere innovation would be the key to success and lets see how far the competition can make companies embark on creativity.

HACKERS CRASH TWITTER AGAIN

0n 11 august, Hackers Crash Twitter again....twitter's servers went down again for a brief period, just days after an attack forced the microblogging site to shut down last week. Twitter said that "Responding to site downtime. We're working to recover from a site outage and will update as we learn more."

The service was continuing to come under attack. However, they had better at dealing with them such that Twitter remains active. Their systems are looking good and the platform is healthy.

Last week, Twitter along with Facebook and LiveJournal were victims of the distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. A pro-Georgian blogger has been identified as the target of the DDoS attacks believed to be an attempt to silence his online criticism of Moscow's role in last year's Georgia-Russia War.

Outages used to be common at Twitter when the small start-up's servers were unable to keep up with the massive amount of data flowing through them. They had gradually become less frequent, before these latest round of attacks started.

HACKERS ATTACKED TWITTER & FACEBOOK

On 6 august , Facebook and Twitter were attacked by hackers with denial-of-service attack .It is strange that established portals/ brand names are also vulnerable to such attacks. This only shows we are not yet fool-proof in security advancements. Some options in twitter still not working. Like upload picture, background image etc.

In a denial-of-service attack a Web site or server is bombarded with more traffic than it can handle, effectively causing online congestion. Such attacks are done from multiple computers and usually hackers send malware data to the target site in unison. After initial denial of any such attack, both Facebook and Twitter have now acknowledged attack on their site by denial-of-service attack.

Attacks such as this are malicious efforts orchestrated to disrupt and make unavailable services such as online banks, credit card payment gateways, and in this case, Twitter for intended customers or users. Twitter is defending against this attack now and will later investigate.

Twitter had declared their scaling problems in early 2007. And as much as the great Twitter outages of 2007 and 2008 frustrated users, these outages are much more serious. Twitter has come a long way since 2007 as 45 million people worldwide now rely on Twitter as a communication platform. They will have to scale if they really want to be the 'Pulse of the Planet.'

Earlier this morning, Facebook encountered network issues related to an apparent distributed denial-of-service attack that resulted in degraded service for some users. No user data was at risk and we have restored full access to the site for most users. We're continuing to monitor the situation to ensure that users have the fast and reliable experience they've come to expect from Facebook. As compared to Twitter, Facebook and Google were able to minimize any impact to their sites along with sites such as Blogger, YouTube and other Google Sites.

Pingdom, a site that tracks server uptime, states that Twitter was offline for about two and a half hours. Last time, Twitter was down due to unplanned downtime was on May 30 this year due to a software error. Denial-of-service attacks are becoming common nowadays. According to Information week, Gawker Media sites and AT&T were hit with it earlier this week. Last week, Internet Systems Consortium warned that BIND 9, the most common domain name server, contained a vulnerability that could be exploited to crash the server, leading to a denial-of-service. The company said that the vulnerability is actively being exploited and it urged users of the software to update immediately.

Amongst all this commotion an interesting piece of news has emerged. A pro-Georgian blogger with accounts on Twitter, Facebook, LiveJournal and Google's Blogger and YouTube was targeted in a denial-of-service attack that led to the site-wide outage at Twitter and problems at the other sites, according to a Facebook executive. "It was a simultaneous attack across a number of properties targeting him to keep his voice from being heard. We're actively investigating the source of the attacks and we hope to be able to find out the individuals involved in the back end and to take action against them if we can," said Max Kelly, Chief Security Officer at Facebook to CNET. The blogger whose account was attacked uses the account name 'Cyxymu' (the name of a town in the Republic of Georgia). Kelly declined to speculate on whether Russian nationalists were behind the attack.

System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Connectors

Microsoft.Unix.Computer announces System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Connectors
Lets See What Microsoft tells about it........

The Operations Manager 2007 R2 Connectors provide Operations Manager 2007 R2 alert forwarding to remote systems, such as an Enterprise Management System
(EMS) or a help desk system. After Operations Manager 2007 R2 forwards an alert
to a remote system, the alert data is synchronized throughout the lifetime of
the alert. The result of that data synchronization is a robust and seamless
systems management environment. Such an environment enables cross-organization support processes to take advantage of the resources and strengths of formerly independent support groups. The ultimate effect is improved enterprise systems health through improved organizational communication.

Sharing data between Operations Manager 2007 R2 and remote systems enables enterprise correlation of events from Windows-based systems, hardware, network, and UNIX systems. Correlating these events allows IT staff to determine the causes of issues and reduce the time to resolution of IT outages. Synchronization of data
between Operations Manager 2007 R2 and remote systems also enables operational
groups to use familiar management interfaces. Users update an alert by using
their management tool, and the data is updated in tools that are used by other
operational groups.

The following connectors are available in this initial RTM:

* Operations Manager 2007 R2 Connector for IBM Tivoli Enterprise Management Console

*Operations Manager 2007 R2 Connector for HP Operations Manager (formerly HP OpenView Operations)

* Operations Manager 2007 R2 Connector for BMC Remedy Action Request System (ARS)

* Operations Manager 2007 R2 Universal Connector

Flash Platform Media and Text Frameworks as Open Source

Adobe Systems has announced launch of two new Adobe Flash Platform open source initiatives, Open Source Media Framework (OSMF) and Text Layout Framework (TLF), for developers, media companies and publishers. By releasing OSMF and TLF as open source, ADOBE Systems r helping in the creation and sharing of best practices for media players and rich text-based web application development. ADOBE Systems believe that these efforts will strengthen the industry and lead to the next generation of web applications, content and video experiences.

OSMF enables developers to easily create unique playback experiences that can leverage plug-ins for advertising , reporting metrics and content delivery along with standard video player features such as playback controls, video navigation, buffering and dynamic streaming. OSMF provides standard functionality along with plug-ins from third parties so content providers have the flexibility to adapt monetization strategies to specific content and the needs of their audiences.

TLF goes beyond what is possible for web text layout using HTML and CSS technologies today, with support for complex languages, bidirectional text, multi-columns and other advanced typographical features and controls. It is an extensible ActionScript library built on top of the text engine in Adobe Flash Player 10 and Adobe AIR 1.5 software. APIs that r standard in the open source Text Layout Framework from Adobe gave us a jumpstart as we leveraged the high-end components for makebook.com. With TLF we can more easily provide our customers with quality typography features and the text layout control they require for their self-publishing projects.

Akamai has joined Adobe to advance the industry toward a widely adopted, cohesive standard for media players that support Adobe Flash Platform technologies. OSMF leverages code from Akamai's Open Video Player and Adobe's expertise and resources to assist media companies and publishers in redefining the benchmarks for online video experiences that are powered by standards based workflows.

Both OSMF and TLF are now freely available as open source software, helping content owners extend their online media efforts as they look to create new business opportunities and monetization strategies for publishing on the Web.

Don't be a Victim

Preventing Web Application Attacks : Don't be a Victim

The attacks on the web applications are increasing , with the attackers having different motives behind their actions.

Web application vulnerabilities r among the most popular targets of attack. The motives of attacks r many. They include stealing information, such as customer lists, by competitors, to organized crimes looking to pilfer customer information, such as credit card numbers.......etc

Now the Vulnerabilities in Web applications r largest vector of enterprise security attacks. Last year, almost 55 percent of vulnerability disclosures affected Web applications1. About 74 percent of Web application vulnerabilities had no available patch for remediation till the end of the year. Stories about exploits that compromise sensitive data frequently mention culprits such as ‘cross-site scripting,’ ‘“SQL injection,’ and ‘buffer overflow.’ Vulnerabilities like these often fall outside the traditional expertise of network security managers. The relative obsecurity of Web application vulnerabilities thus makes them useful for attacks. As many organizations hv discovered, these attacks will evade traditional enterprise network defenses unless you take new precautions.

There are primarily two classes of Web application vulnerabilities: technical vulnerabilities that reside within the actual coding of the application, and logic vulnerabilities that are fundamental weaknesses in the workflow, or business logic, of the application. Both can be avoided if your organization is diligent when it comes to identifying and mitigating these risks.

Technical vulnerabilities comprise problems such as cross-site scripting, which allows attackers to insert malicious HTML code and downloadable scripts into legitimate websites. This code can be used to fool users into thinking they’re interacting with a trusted site, when they’re not; or even to push spyware and Trojans onto the systems used by visitors. Another technical vulnerability is SQL injection, which allows attacks that take advantage of poor database command filtering controls to gather, modify, or even delete information in the application.

Logic vulnerabilities get less attention but are also important. These flaws, unlike information disclosure bugs or inadequate input validation filters, allow attackers to exploit the logic of a Web application. That means that these types of attacks are unique for each specific Web application and require creativity and insight into Web applications and attack techniques to identify. These vulnerabilities make it possible for attackers to twist the rules that developers put into place to do such things as calculating pricing, accepting discounts, or tracking vote tallies.

During customer assessments, we’ve seen vulnerabilities that made it possible to eliminate shipping charges (or get overnight shipping for the price of standard shipping), increase discounts and insert coupons, and even reduce posted prices. These types of attacks are insidious; they can occur over time, and it can be very difficult to identify the revenue loss, because at first glance, each transaction appears to be legitimate.

The problem is growing. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) Project, which tracks all types of publicly disclosed software vulnerabilities, recently reported that Web flaws constituted 45 percent of all vulnerabilities the organization tracked for the nine months of last year. Analysts say Web applications are the focus of 75 percent of attacks.

It’s not just small e-commerce sites that have trouble when it comes to Web application security. Sites such as Google, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and Yahoo! have all reported Web application security problems. And the recent IT systems breach at The TJX Companies, the merchant that owns such retail outlets as T.J. Maxx and Marshalls, shows just how costly mistakes can be: The company recently reported that its earnings will include a 1 cent per share charge, or roughly $4.5 million, related to costs surrounding the attack.

If those risks aren’t enough for Web merchants to increase their focus on Web application security, there is a compliance clock ticking. Companies with e-commerce websites that conduct credit card transactions have had to meet tougher security rules that are part of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCIDSS). The rules were updated in September 2006, but compliance was not mandatory until July 2008. More guidance and stricter compliance rules are sure to come.

The original standard put forth twelve security requirements, including network firewall installation, encrypting cardholder data as it travels, strict authentication and authorization tracking, developing and maintaining secure systems and applications, and a series of active security policies. The updated version 1.2 of the standard, released on October 1 last year, includes significant changes in how Web application security is addressed. For instance, the updated version requires that all custom-built application software be reviewed on regular basis by an application security specialist for vulnerabilities using automated or manual application vulnerability assessment tools or methods; otherwise, those that accept or store credit card transaction information must deploy a Web application firewall.

It’s advisable to vet all Web applications, whether custom-built or purchased, for Web vulnerabilities, and to deploy a Web application firewall.

It’s also advisable to use a Web application vulnerability scanner, supplemented by a human component. First, the scanners work much the same way as network security scanners: they aim to spot security-related configuration and programming errors. Web applications are complex, and application scanners are good at finding technical vulnerabilities. They’ll check the application’s input parameters, and they’ll relentlessly throw many variables at the application in an attempt to break and compromise it.

The second method is to have a human try to hack your system. If you don’t have that type of expertise in-house, consider hiring an experienced Web application security expert. Unlike a vulnerability scanner, the expert can use human ingenuity and creativity to try to find development mistakes, such as logic vulnerabilities, that make it possible to bend your application in ways it wasn’t intended. A skilled consultant will be aware of the ways Web application logic in complex systems can be misused by a thief.

Most importantly, companies must make secure coding a priority throughout their development process. Coupling that with the advice and best practices offered by OWASP will go a long way toward making the corporate website highly secure.

Then, when attackers start poking through the site for security holes, they’ll find nothing, get frustrated, and quickly realize that they should move on to websites operated by those who don’t pay so much attention to Web application security flaws.

Tracking Data Flow

Tracking Data Flow

There is more risk involved in extended enterprises and the level of risk is more for those information that are accessed without authorization.
The extended enterprise has created more business opportunities, but it also carries with it an extended threat of risk: the more the information enterprises have to distribute and manage in more places, the greater the risk of that information being accessed by unauthorized parties.

There are very few businesses that have not yet been hit by some form of electronic attack - from very minor bits of spam email that appear in the inboxes to potentially business-threatening malware and viruses. When such incidents are discovered, the response to them is critical. The damage must be contained quickly - customer data protected, the root cause found, and an accurate record of events and losses produced for the authorities. Furthermore, the investigation process must collect this evidence without adversely affecting the integrity of the information assets involved in the crime. Thus, such forensics provide not just a sense of what has happened but also vital clues as to how recurrence of such attacks could be prevented.

The 2008 Verizon Business Data Breach Investigations Report draws from over 500 forensic investigations handled by the Verizon Business Investigative Response team over a four-year period. This factual evidence offers an objective, first-hand view of real-life data breaches. From the multitude of data collected, the company was able to weave together the stories and statistics from compromise victims around the world, interpreting their tales and aiming to allow fellow IT professionals to avoid what happened to them.

In terms of risks faced by individual industries, the retail, food, and beverage industries account for more than half of all cases in the research. Financial services, though certainly the keepers of great monetary assets, are also well protected in comparison to other industries; they account for 14 percent of breaches. Technology services - including software firms, data warehousing companies, and telecommunication providers - form the only other industry sector with over 10 percent of breaches.

The team also reported a marked increase in forensic engagements outside North America, which was regarded as a part of a broader trend of the world becoming more interconnected through information technologies. As enterprises aggressively seek global partnerships, and as the laws governing the handling and disclosure of such incidents mature, it is likely that this trend will continue.

It is a matter of fact that ever since outside parties were given access to networks, external attacks have vastly outnumbered those from insiders. Almost three-quarters of data breaches investigated were caused by external sources; this was almost four times the number of breaches attributed to insiders (18 percent). However, although these were fewer in numbers, inside breaches had a greater impact than those caused by outsiders when they did occur. With the drive to seek partnerships becoming more important to many organizations, what is also alarming, if not disquieting, to companies that either have or are extending their enterprises, is that business partners were behind over a third of breaches (39 percent), a figure that rose five-fold over the time period of the study.

Even though the percentage of insider attacks remained relatively stable, the number of breaches that originated from an external source or from a partner have changed significantly. The general downward trend of external incidents is mitigated by the trend of breaches involving business partners increasing five-fold between 2004 and 2007. It can be deduced that the decline in the percentage of breaches from external sources is simply the by-product of the rise of compromises from partners.

From network intrusion to laptop theft to administrative errors, sensitive data continue to be compromised from enterprises all over the world. Most breaches result from a combination of distinct yet related events, for example someone who utilizes several types of hacking, rather than a single action. The research revealed that there were seven broad threat categories: malcode (identified as the cause of 31 percent of breaches), hacking (59 percent), deceit (10 percent), misuse (22 percent), physical (15 percent), environmental (0.4 percent), and direct error (3 percent).

Even though direct errors, the errors that directly led to the data compromise, only accounted for a small number of breaches, in 62 percent of breaches there was an internal error that significantly contributed to the breach in some way. These included poor decisions, mis-configurations, omissions, non-compliance, and process breakdowns. Significant omissions contributed to over three quarters of data breaches, where an organization believed that standard security procedures or configurations had been implemented when in fact this was not the case. Mis-configuration was apparent in 15 percent of cases, usually manifested in the form of erroneous system settings. Though accidental disclosure, user blunders, and technical glitches occur frequently, they amounted only to a small portion of errors leading to data compromise.

In terms of deliberate action against information systems, hacking and malcode proved to be the attack method of choice among cyber criminals. In fact, hacking leads to more data breaches than any other category by a margin of almost two to one. The forensics showed that many tools are available to help automate and accelerate the attack process. Attacks targeting applications, software, and services were by far the most common technique, representing 39 percent of all hacking activity leading to data compromise. This apparently follows a trend as attacks in recent years are moving up the stack but operating system, platform, and server-level attacks still account for a sizable portion of breaches.

Nearly a fifth (18 percent) of hacks exploited a specific known vulnerability while 5 percent exploited unknown vulnerabilities for which a patch was not available at the time of the attack. Evidence of re-entry via backdoors, which enable prolonged access to and control of compromised systems, was found in 15 percent of breaches. Furthermore, 90 percent of known vulnerabilities exploited by these attacks had patches available since at least six months prior to the breach, a clear indication of the need to maintain a robust and regular patching program. No breaches were caused by the exploit of vulnerabilities patched within a month or less of the attack, a clear sign that a patch deployment strategy focusing on coverage and consistency is far more effective at preventing data breaches than ‘fire drills’ that attempt to patch particular systems as soon as patches are released.

Given enough time, resources, and inclination, criminals can breach virtually any single organization they choose; but they cannot breach all organizations. Money is the prime motivator in attacks and security compromises are maximized when the effort to prevent is minimized. Unless the value of the information to criminals is inordinately high, it is not optimal for them to expend limited resources on a harder target when a softer one is available. The goal, then, is to implement security measures in such a way that it costs the criminal more to breach your organization than other available targets.

Going forward, there are three main areas on which firms should focus: ensuring that essential controls are met; finding, tracking, and assessing data; and monitoring event logs. Given the current opportunistic nature and difficulty (or rather lack thereof) of attacks leading to data breaches, organizations are wise to focus on ensuring that essential controls are met across the organization and throughout the extended enterprise. This includes following through on security policies so that they are actually implemented and ensuring that a basic set of controls is consistently implemented across the organization.

Accomplishing these goals will make it much more likely that attackers will look at less challenging targets.

Data is everywhere in the modern organization and keeping track of it is an extremely complex challenge. The fundamental principle, however, is quite simple - if you don’t know where data is, you certainly can’t protect it. Based on the hundreds of breaches investigated, efforts to locate, catalogue, track, and assess the risk of data stored in and flowing through information assets are highly beneficial in reducing the likelihood of data compromise.

Though crucial, data protection efforts cannot stop with discovery. Once critical data repositories and flows are identified, they must be monitored. Rather than seeking information overload, organizations should strategically identify what systems should be monitored and what events should cause alerts. Steps should then be taken to ensure alerts are noticed and acted upon when they do happen.

The forensics team concluded that in 87 percent of cases, breaches could have been avoided if reasonable security controls had been in place at the time of the incident. This calls for a fundamental shift in data protection and incident response mentality. While a strong network perimeter is important, it cannot be the only or even the main layer of protection around sensitive information assets. Information itself, wherever it flows in the extended enterprises, must be the focus of security efforts.

IT Professionals give thumbs down to Microsoft

IT Professionals give thumbs down to Microsoft

Microsoft has received some awful feedback from its customers with regard to its services. All the products of the software gaint have received poor ratings by IT professionals for customer satisfaction, integrity, reliability and more.......

This result came from online survey on IT professionals of 347 hardware, software, telecom and service vendors during the second half of 2009. The participants were asked to rate vendors in 10 categories, including integrity, timeliness, communications, customer service, expertise, effectiveness, and whether they would recommend the vendor to others. It then added all the categories for each vendor to come up with a total.

For Microsoft, the ratings were generally miserable. Three different Microsoft businesses were given separate ratings, including operating systems, applications, and infrastructure. Looking at the poor ratings received by Microsoft for this quarter.

IT professionals rating vendors in April, May and June has hit Microsoft with poor customer satisfaction scores for the company's server and infrastructure software (55 out of 100, down nearly 17 percent), operating systems (67, down 9.5 percent) and applications (64, off nearly 18 percent).

The survey also saw some of the other major technology companies take the bottom positions. Verizon was at the bottom of the list, with a 61 rating, followed by Sprint Nextel with 64, and Microsoft applications with 64. Microsoft operating systems was tied with AT&T Wireless for the next worst rating with a 67. That means Microsoft took two of the bottom five spots. IBM Informix, meanwhile, took the top spot for vendors with a 96. After this poor performance by Microsoft, all eyes are now on Windows 7, to see if that can bring some respite to the company.

PC Consumption

PC consumption in the current fiscal year 2009-10 is expected to cross 7.3 million units, registering a seven percent growth after improving market sentiments, as the sales comprising desktop computers, notebooks and netbooks dropped by seven percent in the period between April '08 and March '09. The total sales figure were 6.79 million (67.9 lakh) units, which is a decline by seven percent as compared to the previous year. IT consumption in 2008-09 was severely impacted in the second half of the fiscal year. A study commenced by Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology (MAIT), a body representing India's IT hardware, training and R&D services sectors, stated the findings of its Industry Performance Review for fiscal 2008-09.

Sales of notebooks dropped sharply by 17 percent, compared to 114 percent previous year. Desktop sales went down by four percent. The October - December quarter was the most severely impacted, subsequent to which growth in PC consumption started to show signs of revival.

"Consumer sentiment was subdued due to uncertainty in the economy in 2008-09 which impacted the consumption of IT in the country. While consumption in the first-half of the fiscal was satisfactory, less than expected off take in sales in the second-half pulled down the overall growth into the negative quadrant. A silver lining in the second-half of 2008-09 was the emergence of a new product category, the net book that took the fancy of the consumers. This new form-factor appeared to be better insulated from the prevailing market sentiments," said Vinnie Mehta, Executive Director, MAIT.

"Desktop sales registered 5.27 million (52.7 lakh units) declining by four percent, Notebooks along with netbooks recorded 1.51 million (15.1 lakh) units with a fall of seven percent. Consumption of netbooks exceeded 70 thousand units in fiscal 2008-09. There were traditional downward trend in pricing for IT products as the dollar continued to be strong against the rupee," informed Mehta.

Western India led PC consumption accounting for 37 percent, and South followed by 23 percent of the market respectively. Sales in the West grew by twelve percent over 2007-08, while in South it declined 22 percent. PC consumption in the East increased by 18 percent, accounting to 22 percent of the market, a reflection of IT activities making their way in the region. The Northern states witnessed a decline of 34 percent in PC sales, they accounted for 18 percent of the market.

MNC's had a share of 51 percent of the total desktop market in 2008-09, registering eight percent growth as compared to 45 percent share last year. Indian brands fell from 22 percent to 18 percent, a decline of 22 percent in overall. Assembled desktops and unbranded systems witnessed a negative growth of 10 percent in absolute units accounting for 31 percent, down from 33 percent, of total desktop sales in 2008-09.
Desktop consumption in 2008-09 was dominated by P4 based units, which accounted for 59 percent of total sales.

Server sales declined by two percent, as the number of internet users rose from 7.2 million to 8.6 million.
